When a kitchen is very long and lacks a center island, planning out the positions of appliances and workspaces is critical. These pendant lights are from a salvage yard in Portland, Oregon.

Start with Essentials

In conceptualizing a kitchen, I think of the layout in terms of a triangle that forms the joinder of the three most critical kitchen appliances: the refrigerator, the range, and the sink. Everything else is built around the seamless integration of these essentials. A kitchen can’t just be pretty; it has to be functional. Consider adding the aesthetic touches as a reward for accomplishing this utilitarian task. I prefer to design spaces that I describe as timeless: spaces that will not begin to look dated with the arrival of a new design trend. You can always alter accessories or repaint to keep a space au courant; but by selecting classic elements, you will create a space that will stand the test of time.
